DANNY AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA
This production was a passion project of Hannah Beck. What was to be a weekend performance with some friends turned into a full blown Equity production at The Davenport Theatre, with my producing partner, and husband to Hannah, Sean Hoagland.

The setting is a rundown bar in the Bronx, where two of society's rejects, Danny and Roberta, strike up a halting conversation over their beer. He is a brooding, self-loathing young man who resorts more to violence than reason, she is a single mother who lives with the parents who raise her child and spends her nights out partying late, and is out looking for reasons to prove her worthlessness to herself.
Tybalt and Mercutio now fill the roles of the star crossed lovers born to be enemies. Constructed around Shakespeare's original dialogue and expanded upon into a love story of intrigue, scheming, and hope, two beloved characters get new life, as they each grow into individuals hoping to find a companion in a world where their sexuality has no voice or champion.
The provocative account of some sort of gay man living some sort of life as an English Teacher in South Korea. His best friend Stella has been cheating on her girlfriend, behavior Gay Boy detests, but this doesn’t prevent him from sleeping with as many men as possible. On the surface, Gay Boy may seem like a “typical” gay boy: highly sexed, sassy, and reveling in both. But when his vulnerability surfaces after a one-night stand, truths about his past are finally revealed.
GAY BOY has its world premiere at the 2017 Dream Up Festival at Theatre for the New City (Crystal Field, Artistic Director). It was performed in the Queerly Festival, 2018, and was official selection for the 2018 NYC Fringe Festival.
This show is written and performed by JD Stewart.
